Students from the paralegal and legal studies programs as well as the law society student group, came together with alumni for an opportunity to learn more about wrongful conviction. Alumna, Lisa Denig '00, presented on the process of overturning a wrongful conviction and gave some examples of various cases. She also spoke about changes coming to NY State laws that should have an impact in reducing the number of wrongful convictions for NY.
Lisa formerly worked with the District Attorney's office in White Plains, NY. She has now shifted focus to civil trials. NY state has begun mandating that all civil cases go through mediation prior to a court appearance. Lisa is working to develop the process by which this will happen.
We were pleased to have partnered with Cynthia Haycock, Esq., the new Curriculum Chair of the Paralegal Program. We look forward to future opportunities to bring alumni and students of the program together.
