Volunteer Opportunities

Please note - as the college continues to monitor the impact of covid on our campus, some of our volunteers functions are offered in a new format and/or may not be currently available.

The Alumni Association is partnering across campus to develop meaningful opportunities for alumni to stay connected with Westchester Community College. Volunteers can serve in a variety of roles that will enhance engagement of alumni with the campus, one another, faculty/staff, and the students. Admissions Office

Volunteer roles include giving tours and assisting with meeting and greeting at Open Houses, providing a 5-10 minute presentation to prospective students and their parents at information days, and representing Westchester Community College at College Fairs around the region.

Alumni Council

Elected volunteer board of alumni who work closely with the Director of Alumni Engagement to strengthen the community of alumni through meaningful outreach, communications and events. The Council meets one Tuesday a month during the academic year. The meetings focus on key outreach to alumni, opportunities for engagement with campus offices/programs, event planning and support, and financial support for WCC. Council meetings are open to the alumni community. Alumni seeking to serve on the Council must submit an application form. Terms of service are three-years.

Alumni Committees

There are three sub-committees of the Alumni Council which are open to all alumni for participation. This is a great way to volunteer your time without taking on the full role of a Council member or to get to know the Council better. Those committees are Alumni Outreach, Campus Outreach and Philanthropy. A brief description of each can be found in the Alumni Association By-Laws.

College Connections Mentors

Alumni currently enrolled or recently graduated from four-year institutions are paired with graduating students transferring to that same college or university. Mentors help to answer questions about navigating the new campus, easing the stress of transition to a new school. Pairings are made in the spring.

Financial Education Series Planning Committee

Group of professionals, working within the financial sector, who identify current topics of interest for the series, identify speakers, and help to guide questions to be addressed during the session.

Native Plant Center

Volunteers who are interested in gardening are invited to come help in the Native Plant Center gardens on campus. There are weekly volunteer days as well as larger groups who come in throughout the year. Assistance is also needed in the spring for the annual plant sale which is held in late April.

Speakers

Various offices on campus are regularly seeking opportunities to have alumni return to campus to speak to the students. Topics for presentation range from sharing your personal story of WCC at an Admissions Open House or other featured events during the year, speaking about your career or current topics within your profession in a classroom, and so many others.

Talents

Many alumni of Westchester Community College are working in fields that require special talents or skills such as photography, writing, graphic design, social media outreach, and others. Please let us know you are interested in volunteering your services for photography at events, writing for our newsletters, website or invitation design, and advancing our social media outreach.

Volunteer Corps

The Westchester Community College Volunteer Corps was established in 1992 to help provide students with services that go beyond the college’s budget. Volunteers serve in a variety of roles across the campus. Some work directly with students throughout the semester, one-on-one or in small groups. Conversation partners hold weekly chats with ESL students to help them gain confidence in speaking English. Tutors help students develop reading, writing, math, science, and computer science skills at tutorial centers throughout the campus. Other volunteers work on special projects over the course of the year, helping to restore the beauty of our historic landscaping, or assisting with cultural arts programs.
